Caring Moments

Terry and Vicki Winn

National Carer Portrait Series
Duration: 8 minutes 31 secs

Hawkes Bay Photographer Terry Winn and his wife Vicki spent a year travelling around New Zealand, photographing New Zealand carers and those they support.  The result: More than 40 images, which were recently on display at the Caring Moments' portrait exhibition held at the Hastings Art Gallery (formerly the Hawkes Bay Exhibition Centre).  Family Care Radio asked Terry and Vicki about the personal stories behind the photographs, and plans to take the collection on a national tour with Carers NZ.

Wayne Halkyard

It's time to meet Wayne Halkyard, the man behind Carers NZ's Strength for Caring exercise programme.  Wayne has been bodybuilding for 30 years, and currently holds two national titles.  From his home in the Far North, Wayne has developed a simple exercise programme to help carers build strength and boost wellbeing.  In future shows Wayne will talk you through some of the exercises, and give nutritional advice to preserve and build energy.  In this first chat with Wayne, we learn about his bodybuilding success ... and how he is using this knowledge to help carers.

Active Wellness with ACC

ActiveWellness with ACC: Stay safe in the bathroom
Duration:  6 minutes 05 seconds

Bathrooms are a high risk area.  Watching out for spills, wearing appropriate footwear, putting your towels in the right place, and even thinking through what to do if someone phones you while you are in the bathroom can all help to prevent nasty accidents.  In this third instalment of our home safety series, supporting the Government's wellbeing and learning programme for family carers, we talk again to ACC's Jessica MacDonald to get some practical tips and advice.

Continence Association

Managing Continence At Home
Duration 6 minutes 43 seconds

Managing continence at home can be one of the most difficult issues faced by carers.  In our first feature in this series we talk with Sonja Karon, who is the secretary of the Continence Association and by profession a contience advisor for the Auckland District Health Board.  In future programmes Sonja will share advice about different aspects of managing continence ... but first, we learn about what her job involves, and how families can access free continence advice, products, and support.

What's in Part 2

Family Choices

Deciding the time has come for residential care can be one of the hardest transitions experienced by family carers and their loved ones.  We spoke to two well known New Zealanders who faced this challenge with their ageing parents.
